Thinking back; Arvo Pärt said something to me while we where eating dinner at a chinese restaurant, together with a couple of composer colleagues in the year 2000. I was still a student at the Royal Academy of Music in Denmark. I was concerned about grasping all the knowledge and information I got; from Palestrina to Xenakis, and how to make it somehow useful to my own artistic direction, He said; “You can not know everything, and that’s ok. You can only navigate between your own little islands of knowledge, of things you know well. And that’s enough”. This was the only thing I needed to know. That day still means alot to me. I think of it when the overload information society goes crazy, and there’s no more space in my brain, mind and soul.
